Freezing on every alternate boot up!

I have a laptop here that has just been reloaded with WinXP Home - following a new HDD installation. I downloaded drivers from sis and all appears well except... every alternate boot up attempt freezes! If I kill the power and reboot is goes fine. Is this a driver issue?...
