Dell Inspiron 4000

Laptop starts only in safe mode, otherwise screen goes blank during win 2000 Pro boot. Music plays after screen is dark - seems like it boots but can't see anything. Tried system restore, can't update BIOS withot floppy drive, any ideas short of reinstalling operating system?
